This morning I woke up much earlier than I have in quite some time. Before the babe, before the sun. Not because I needed to or even because I wanted to, but because I felt rested. I woke up feeling refreshed and energized. I wanted to enjoy that feeling, I wanted to soak up the stillness of our home... and laying there in bed made my mind race with thoughts of the days to-dos and tonights dinner.. and the weekend and.. well you get it..
So I got up and out of bed.
I started a pot of coffee and lit some incense. I sat on the living room floor with my legs stretched out in front of me. I listened as those last few drops of sweet, sweet caffeine dripped into that hot sea of life. I focused on the smoke, steady at first then bursting into a random yet rhythmic dance and I was calm.
I stared out my window and watched the tiny bits of Texas snow that had collected during the mid-night hours melt away into the ground. The ice began to drip from tree branches as the temperature slowly climbed above freezing and the birds, in all their fluff began to stir. Some so fluffed up I could barely see their beaks. how they keep those tiny little feet bird warm is a miracle.
I poured my coffee into one of my favorite mugs. raising the pot as it flowed, watching it splash and crash into itself. 2 spoon fulls of sugar and a generous splash of homemade creamer. This week is caramel flavored.
I took long, slow, deep breaths.
I sat and sipped and sipped and stretched in the silence before she would wake.
I knew it would be soon.
My senses were happy.
This was the most mindful I had been in a very long time. The first time I hadn't been busy with thoughts, in well... what seemed like an eternity.
Then something unexpected and truly extraordinary happened. Something I feel like I've been waiting on since we got to this place- the sun broke through the clouds and hit me in the face.
Much like my cuppa joe, it was warm it was good and oh so sweet.
Chime in waking baby and "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles on repeat ...
Today we will thrive!!!
